The Wave 15 Trap

You queue into Hard mode for the first time. You have cleared Normal mode wave 90 three times. Your Upgraded Cameraman deletes everything. You are confident. The first 10 waves feel identical to Normal — maybe the enemies take an extra hit or two, but nothing your Titans cannot handle.

Then wave 15 spawns.

Shielded enemies walk onto the map. Your Upgraded Cameraman’s beam, which one-shots everything in Normal, deals 20% damage. Your Upgraded Speakerman’s rapid fire chips away at the shield bar but cannot break it. The shielded units walk past your entire defense line. They hit your base. By wave 18, you are staring at a defeat screen with 3,200 Cen in the bank and no Titan Drill Man deployed.

This is the Hard mode filter. It is not a difficulty increase. It is a purchase-order check. If you spent your early Cen the same way you do in Normal — buying base Titans at waves 3, 5, and 8 — you cannot afford Drill Man by wave 15. The run ends before it starts.

This guide covers every adjustment Hard mode demands: the exact gear floor, the revised purchase order, the wave-by-wave threats that change from Normal, and the decision framework for knowing when you are actually ready to make the switch.

What Hard Mode Actually Changes

Hard mode is not Normal with a multiplier. The changes are mechanical, not just numerical.

Enemy Scaling

  • Enemy HP: +40% over base. Your Titans need roughly 1.5x the damage output to clear waves at the same pace. This is why Normal-mode clear speed drops by 35-40% in Hard mode until your Titans are leveled.
  • Enemy damage: +25% over base. Your Titans die faster. Positioning mistakes that cost you 10% HP in Normal cost you 35% in Hard. Two positioning errors in a row will lose a Titan.
  • Boss HP: +40% over base, with faster add spawns. The wave 30 boss spawns adds every 18 seconds instead of 20. The wave 50 boss spawns adds every 12 seconds instead of 15. These three-second differences add up to an extra add wave per boss fight — and that extra add wave is what kills Titans that are already stretched thin.

Mechanical Changes

  • Shielded enemies appear at wave 15 (instead of wave 30). This is the single biggest adjustment. Your purchase window for Titan Drill Man collapses from 30 waves to 15.
  • Shielded enemy density is higher. Wave 15 in Hard mode spawns 6 shielded units. Wave 34 spawns 12. In Normal, the first shielded wave at 30 has only 4 shielded units. Hard mode doubles the threat at half the preparation time.
  • Bosses gain cleave at wave 30 instead of wave 40. The wave 30 boss in Hard mode has the cleave attack that Normal mode bosses do not get until wave 40. If your Titans are stacked at a chokepoint for wave 30, the cleave hits all of them.

Economy

  • Cen multiplier: 1.5x. You earn 50% more Cen per kill in Hard mode. This is the reward for the increased difficulty. But as covered in the farming section below, the multiplier only matters if your clear speed holds up.

The Pre-Hard Checklist: Minimum Requirements

Do not queue into Hard mode until you can answer yes to all five questions.

  1. Can you clear Normal mode wave 90 without losing a single Titan? Not “can you reach wave 90.” Can you clear it clean. If a Titan dies at any point during your Normal mode run, you are not ready. Hard mode will kill that same Titan 10 waves earlier.

  2. Do you have Titan Drill Man at max level? Drill Man is not optional in Hard mode. Shielded enemies at wave 15 demand armor pierce. A level-1 Drill Man’s drill does not break shields fast enough. Max it.

  3. Do you have Upgraded Titan Cameraman AND Upgraded Titan Speakerman at max level? These are your core DPS and crowd control. Hard mode’s 40% HP increase means base versions of either Titan are dead weight by wave 20.

  4. Do you have at least 6,000 Cen saved? You need 5,000 for Drill Man by wave 15 and you need buffer for the base Titans you must buy before that. Entering Hard mode with less than 6,000 Cen means you cannot afford Drill Man before the first shielded wave.

  5. Do you know the wave 15, 30, 34, 40, and 50 boss patterns? Hard mode does not change boss mechanics — it moves them earlier and makes them hit harder. If you do not know that wave 30’s boss cleaves or that wave 40’s boss charges, you will learn by losing a run. Learn in Normal mode first.

Optimal Loadout for Hard Mode

Your Titan lineup for a full 90-wave Hard mode clear should look like this:

  • Titan Drill Man (max level) — Deploy by wave 15. Position at the primary chokepoint closest to enemy spawn. Its armor pierce ignores shields entirely. Without it, shielded enemies walk through your defense.
  • Upgraded Titan Cameraman (max level) — Your highest single-target DPS. Deploy by wave 22-24. Position at maximum distance from spawn so its beam has the longest firing window before enemies close.
  • Upgraded Titan Speakerman (max level) — Crowd control and rapid-fire tagging. Deploy by wave 30-32. Position centrally where its sonic blasts cover both lanes.
  • Titan TV Man (level 3 minimum) — Add clear for boss waves. Deploy by wave 40-42. Position dead center so its screen-wide AoE covers both lanes simultaneously.
  • Titan Cineman (level 2 minimum) — Vulnerability debuff for bosses. Deploy by wave 50-52. Position near TV Man so its spotlight radius overlaps the boss’s path.

If you are missing TV Man or Cineman, you can reach wave 50 with the first three Titans. You will not survive wave 50 without them. The boss’s adds and rage phase demand both add clear and debuff support.

Hard Mode Purchase Order

Every Cen matters in Hard mode. The 15-wave window before shielded enemies forces ruthless efficiency.

WavePurchaseCostNotes
5Titan Cameraman350Only base Titan worth buying. Skip base Speakerman.
10Titan Speakerman900Deploy at chokepoint. Do not upgrade yet.
15Titan Drill Man5,000Mandatory. If you cannot afford it, restart.
22-24Upgraded Cameraman2,500Your first major DPS spike.
30-32Upgraded Speakerman3,200Crowd control spike. Deploy before wave 34’s shielded swarm.
40-42Titan TV Man3,800Add clear for wave 45+ boss fights.
50-52Titan Cineman4,200Debuff support for wave 50+ bosses.
60-62Upgraded TV Man6,500Late-game add clear spike.
70+Upgraded Cineman5,000Final power spike. Optional if run is stable.

The wave ranges are approximate — Cen income varies slightly by kill efficiency. The critical rule: never delay Drill Man past wave 15. If you are at wave 14 with 4,600 Cen, sell a base Titan if you have to. Drill Man is non-negotiable.

Wave-by-Wave Strategy

Early Waves (1-15): The Survival Sprint

Waves 1-10 feel like Normal mode. Enemies die in 2-3 hits instead of 1-2. The difference is noticeable but not threatening. Do not get comfortable.

Your only job in waves 1-15 is saving Cen for Drill Man. Buy Titan Cameraman at wave 5 (350 Cen) and Titan Speakerman at wave 10 (900 Cen). Buy nothing else. No upgrades. No filler units. No base Titan TV Man. Every 100 Cen you spend on anything other than Drill Man delays your armor pierce by one wave — and wave 15 does not wait.

Wave 15 itself: 6 shielded enemies mixed into a standard wave. If Drill Man is deployed and positioned at the chokepoint, it shreds them in 3-4 drill hits. If Drill Man is not deployed, the shielded units walk past your entire lineup. There is no stopgap. There is no clever positioning trick that saves you. You either have Drill Man or you lose.

Mid Waves (16-50): The Gear Check Gauntlet

Waves 16-25: You have Drill Man. Shielded enemies are not a threat. Your priority now is building toward Upgraded Cameraman. Save every Cen. Buy it by wave 22-24. The moment Upgraded Cameraman deploys, your clear speed jumps noticeably — the 40% HP penalty starts to feel manageable.

Waves 26-35: This is the danger zone. Three threats converge:

  • Wave 30 boss has cleave and hits all Titans in its lane. Spread your Titans 15+ studs apart for this wave specifically. Clustering at a chokepoint — which works perfectly through wave 29 — gets your entire lineup hit by one cleave.
  • Wave 34 spawns 12 shielded enemies. Your Drill Man handles them, but only if it is alive. If Drill Man died to the wave 30 boss cleave because you had it stacked with your other Titans, the shielded enemies at wave 34 become a wipe condition.
  • You need Upgraded Speakerman by wave 30-32. Its rapid fire clears the increasing enemy density. Without it, your single-target Titans get overwhelmed by enemy count.

Waves 36-50: Boss waves at 40 and 50 are the run-enders. Wave 40’s boss has a targeted charge — it freezes, faces a Titan, and charges in a straight line. The tell: the boss stops moving and orients toward a specific Titan for a full second. When you see that, move the targeted Titan. Immediately. The charge hits everything in its path.

Wave 50 is the full exam. Boss with cleave, adds every 12 seconds, rage phase at 50% HP. You need Titan TV Man deployed by wave 40-42 and Titan Cineman by wave 50. The rotation: Cineman spotlight at 0 seconds, Cameraman beam at 0.5 seconds, TV Man screen attack at the rage trigger. Save every ability for wave 50. Do not use a single ability on wave 49.

Late Waves (51-90): The Endurance Test

Waves 51-70 are the victory lap if you survived wave 50. Enemy HP continues to scale, but your full Titan lineup with Cineman’s debuff and TV Man’s add clear handles the scaling smoothly. Buy Upgraded TV Man by wave 60-62. The extra AoE damage makes wave 60-70 swarms trivial.

Waves 71-90: enemy density peaks. Waves 80 and 90 have double spawn lanes — enemies come from two directions simultaneously. Check your mini-map at wave 79 and 89. Split your Titans 3-and-2 or 2-and-3 across both lanes. A lopsided 4-and-1 split leaves one lane undefended and the run ends.

Wave 90’s boss is the final test. It has every mechanic from earlier bosses — cleave, charge, adds, rage phase — plus a teleport that repositions it behind your Titans. When the boss teleports, immediately reposition your back-line Titans forward. The teleport is designed to kill your DPS units that are positioned at maximum distance. Move them toward the center of the map the moment the boss disappears.

Three Failure Patterns That Kill Hard Mode Runs

Almost every Hard mode wipe fits one of these three patterns. Identify which one killed your last run and adjust.

Pattern 1: The Normal-Mode Purchase Order. Player buys Titan Cameraman at wave 3, Titan Speakerman at wave 5, base Titan TV Man at wave 8, and maybe a filler unit at wave 12. Then wave 15 arrives, the player has 2,800 Cen, and Drill Man costs 5,000. The shielded enemies walk through the defense. Run over by wave 18.

The fix is simple but uncomfortable: skip every purchase that is not Titan Cameraman (350) and Titan Speakerman (900). Save the remaining 3,750 Cen for Drill Man. If you hit wave 13 with less than 4,500 Cen, sell Titan Speakerman. A dead run with Cen in the bank is worse than a run with two base Titans and Drill Man deployed.

Pattern 2: Clustered Titans at Boss Waves. Player positions all five Titans at a single chokepoint because it works beautifully against swarms. Wave 30 boss spawns. Cleave hits all five Titans. Two die. The player spends the rest of the run trying to recover from a lost core Titan and never catches up.

The fix: spread Titans 15+ studs apart for every boss wave ending in 0. Check the wave number. If it ends in 9, reposition during the wave transition. The mini-map tells you exactly where your Titans are. If any two are within 15 studs of each other, move one. Do this before every wave 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90.

Pattern 3: Abilities on Cooldown Entering Boss Waves. Player uses Cameraman beam to clean up wave 29 stragglers. Wave 30 boss spawns. Beam is on cooldown for 8 more seconds. The boss gets 8 seconds of free damage. A Titan dies. The run spirals.

The fix: never use an ability on any wave ending in 9. Not Cameraman beam. Not Cineman spotlight. Not TV Man screen attack. Not Speakerman sonic blast. Not Drill Man drill. If you accidentally used one, intentionally leak wave 49 — let one small enemy through. The wave reset puts all abilities off cooldown. One leaked wave costs 100 Cen. Restarting a failed boss wave costs 15-20 minutes. Leak the wave.

Decision Framework: When to Move from Normal to Hard

Hard mode is not a linear upgrade from Normal. It is a different game with different purchase timing and different threat windows. Use this framework to decide if you are ready.

You are ready for Hard mode if:

  • You clear Normal mode wave 90 without losing a Titan, consistently (3+ runs in a row)
  • You have Titan Drill Man, Upgraded Cameraman, and Upgraded Speakerman at max level
  • You have at least 6,000 Cen saved before queueing
  • You can name the wave 15, 30, 34, 40, and 50 boss mechanics from memory
  • You know the Hard mode purchase order and can execute it without checking a guide mid-run

You are NOT ready for Hard mode if:

  • You lose a Titan at any point during a Normal mode clear
  • You do not own Titan Drill Man or it is below max level
  • You rely on base Titans past wave 20 in Normal mode
  • You do not know what wave shielded enemies first appear in Hard mode (if you had to look it up, you are not ready)
  • You have never fought the wave 50 boss in Normal mode

The honest test: Queue into Hard mode. If you cannot afford Titan Drill Man by wave 15, leave the match. Do not waste 20 minutes on a doomed run. Farm Normal mode for another 3,000-5,000 Cen and try again. Most players need 2-3 attempts before the purchase timing clicks. That is normal. The players who succeed are the ones who recognize a failed run at wave 14 and restart, not the ones who hope the shielded enemies will somehow miss their base.

Counter-Intuitive Truths About Hard Mode

These five ideas contradict what most players assume about Hard mode. They are also why experienced players clear wave 90 consistently while equally geared players wipe at wave 40.

Hard mode is not better for farming until your clear speed catches up. The 1.5x Cen multiplier looks like a 50% income boost. It is not. The 40% enemy HP increase means your clear speed drops by roughly 35-40%. A Normal mode run to wave 60 takes about 25 minutes and earns roughly 3,000 Cen from waves 40-60 — about 7,200 Cen per hour. A Hard mode run to wave 60 takes about 38 minutes and earns roughly 4,500 Cen — about 7,100 Cen per hour. They are nearly identical. Hard mode only pulls ahead when your clear speed matches your Normal-mode pace. For most players still learning Hard mode, Normal mode actually gives more Cen per hour. Play the mode you clear efficiently, not the one with the bigger multiplier.

Base Titans are a trap in Hard mode. In Normal, buying Titan Cameraman (350), Titan Speakerman (900), and base Titan TV Man (1,200) before wave 15 is standard and safe. In Hard, buying that same trio costs 2,450 Cen — almost half of Drill Man’s cost. Every base Titan you buy delays Drill Man. The only base Titans worth buying in Hard mode are Cameraman (350) at wave 5 and Speakerman (900) at wave 10. Everything else is a trap that kills your run at wave 15.

The most dangerous wave in Hard mode is not 50. It is 34. Players prepare for wave 50. They save abilities. They position carefully. Nobody prepares for wave 34. It is a standard wave — no boss, no special announcement — but it spawns 12 shielded enemies. If your Drill Man died to the wave 30 boss cleave because you had it stacked with your other Titans, wave 34 becomes an instant wipe. The shielded enemies walk through your defense and there is nothing you can do about it. Protect Drill Man during wave 30. Its survival is the difference between clearing wave 34 and losing the run to a wave nobody thinks about.

Selling a Titan to afford Drill Man is the correct play. At wave 13, you have 4,200 Cen. Drill Man costs 5,000. You have Titan Cameraman (350) and Titan Speakerman (900) deployed. Most players keep both and hope they earn 800 Cen in two waves. They do not. The correct play: sell Titan Speakerman. You get 450 Cen back (half its purchase cost). You now have 4,650 Cen. Farm waves 13 and 14 — you need 350 more Cen. Buy Drill Man at wave 15. You now have one base Titan (Cameraman) and Drill Man. It feels terrible. It is also the only way to survive wave 15. A run with two base Titans and no Drill Man is a dead run. A run with one base Titan and Drill Man is a live run. Sell the Titan.

Wave 90’s teleporting boss punishes the positioning you used all game. For 89 waves, you positioned Upgraded Cameraman at maximum distance from spawn. It worked perfectly. The wave 90 boss teleports behind your Titans. Cameraman is now in melee range of a boss with cleave. It dies in 5 seconds. The fix: the moment the boss teleports, move Cameraman and Cineman toward the center of the map. Do not leave them at the back line. The teleport is designed to kill back-line DPS. Move them before the boss reappears.
