Your First 50 Deaths Are Normal

DOORS has no tutorial. It drops you in a hotel and starts sending monsters at you. You will die. A lot. The average new player dies 30-50 times before their first Hotel clear (Room 100). This is not a reflection of your skill — the game is designed to be learned through dying.

The players who clear the Hotel fastest aren’t the ones with the best reflexes. They’re the ones who learn the fastest from each death. Every time you die, ask: what sound did I hear right before? What room was I in? What did I do wrong?

The 3-Minute Drill

This is the single most efficient way to learn DOORS. It takes 30 minutes and will save you 20+ hours of frustrating deaths:

  1. Start a run. Don’t buy items. Don’t look for loot. Sprint from room to room.
  2. When you hear Rush or Ambush: don’t hide. Let it kill you.
  3. Restart immediately. Do it again.

After 10 runs (roughly 30 minutes), you will have heard Rush’s screech 15-25 times. The sound will be burned into your brain. You will never freeze when you hear it again because your brain now processes “screech = Rush = closet” as a reflex, not a thought.

This drill works because DOORS deaths have no penalty — items don’t carry over between runs. You lose nothing by dying. You gain pattern recognition that takes 50 cautious runs to build naturally.

Your First Clear: The Practical Route

After the drill, here’s the route to your first clear:

Before starting: Buy Gummy Flashlight (150 Credits) + 2 Medkits (100 Credits). No batteries to manage. No complex items to juggle. Just light and healing.

Floors 1-10: Practice the room protocol: enter, identify exit, note nearest closet. Screech will appear in dark rooms — spin 360° when you hear “psst.”

Floors 11-30: Rush and Ambush are active. Closet discipline: enter immediately on screech, exit after pass for Rush, stay for all passes for Ambush.

Floor 50 (Library): Figure encounter. Walk only. Crouch when Figure listens. Place books when Figure is on the far side. It’s a rhythm puzzle, not a stealth test.

Floors 51-100: Rush, Ambush, and Seek chase repeat. You’ve handled all of these before. The late Hotel is an endurance test, not a skill test.
