The Solo Mindset: Everything Changes
Lethal Company is balanced around 4 players. Playing solo means every system works against you:
| System | 4 Players | Solo |
|---|---|---|
| Scrap requirement (quota) | Split across 4 | All on you |
| Monster aggro | Split across 4 | 100% on you |
| Item carrying (4 slots) | 16 slots total | 4 slots total |
| Death penalty | 1/4 of team’s scrap lost | Everything lost |
| Coil-Head counterplay | One stares, one loots | Impossible |
| Ship monitor | Someone can watch radar | You lose radar intel while inside |
Solo isn’t just “harder” — it requires a completely different strategy.
Solo Loadout: Every Slot Counts
Essential Items (Buy Every Run)
| Item | Cost | Priority | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shovel | 30 | #1 | Self-defense against Thumpers, Bunker Spiders |
| Flashlight | 15 | #2 | Can’t navigate dark interiors without it |
| Walkie-Talkie | 12 | #3 | Only if someone is on ship radar — otherwise skip |
Situational Purchases
| Item | When to Buy | Skip If |
|---|---|---|
| Pro-Flashlight | After 2 successful runs | You’re short on credits |
| Stun Grenade | When attempting paid moons | You have no self-defense |
| Zap Gun | Never solo — requires 2 people to use effectively | Always |
The Shovel Is Non-Negotiable
Without a Shovel, Thumpers and Bunker Spiders are run-enders. With a Shovel, they’re manageable. The 30-credit investment is the single highest-value purchase for solo play.
Best Moons for Solo
| Moon | Solo Viability | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Assurance | ★★★★★ | Free, small map, fire exit, C hazard, no Coil-Heads |
| March | ★★★★☆ | Free, fire exit, more scrap, slightly larger map |
| Offense | ★★★☆☆ | 40 credits, C hazard, but paid moons are risky solo |
| Vow | ★★★☆☆ | Free, but bridge deaths and forest keepers are common |
| Experimentation | ★★☆☆☆ | Tutorial moon, scrap pool too small for quota 2+ |
| Rend | ★★☆☆☆ | B hazard = Coil-Head possible, high risk |
| Titan | ★☆☆☆☆ | S+ hazard, Coil-Heads + Jesters, borderline impossible solo |
Enemy-Specific Solo Counterplay
Bracken (The Watcher)
Bracken’s AI checks how long you look at it. In co-op, you can trade glances with teammates. Solo, you must manage your own gaze:
- If you see a Bracken, take a sub-0.5 second glance to confirm position
- Look away — at the floor, at a wall
- Back away slowly while keeping it in peripheral vision
- Once you round a corner, leave that area entirely
- Bracken kills instantly when its patience runs out — there’s no second chance solo
Thumper (The Charger)
Thumper is fast in open spaces but turns slowly. Solo strategy:
- Stand your ground — running just gets you hit from behind
- Swing the Shovel as it approaches
- Backpedal while swinging (S + left click)
- 3-4 Shovel hits kill a Thumper
- Heal after the fight — Thumper hits deal 20-40 damage
Bunker Spider (The Web Weaver)
The web is the real threat, not the spider:
- Walk through webs, don’t run (running triggers aggro)
- If the spider aggros: Shovel it 2-3 times while backpedaling
- Don’t get cornered — always know your exit path
- Webs slow you by 70% — the spider catches you if you’re webbed
Eyeless Dog (Outside Night Threat)
These only spawn outside on A+ hazard moons:
- Crouch immediately when you hear barking
- Don’t move — Eyeless Dogs track sound, not sight
- Wait 10+ seconds after the barking stops
- Crouch-walk to the ship, staying behind terrain
- Never sprint outside on high-hazard moons at night
Nutcracker (Armed Sentry)
The Nutcracker is a stationary turret enemy:
- Listen for the clicking sound — it signals the Nutcracker is scanning
- Stop moving during the click scan (about 1.5 seconds)
- Move between scans — you have ~3-4 seconds
- Rush it with a Shovel during the reload window (after it fires)
- The dropped Shotgun is the best solo weapon but has 2 shells max
Coil-Head (The Run Ender)
There is no solo counterplay for Coil-Heads. They require one player to maintain eye contact while another loots. Solo, your options are:
- Leave the moon immediately
- If you’re trapped: stare at it and back toward the exit (extremely slow, risky)
- Prevention: don’t go to moons where Coil-Heads spawn
Quota Strategy for Solo
| Quota # | Requirement | Best Moon | Scrap Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (130) | 130 | Assurance | 200 (build surplus) |
| 2 (250) | 250 | Assurance | 350 |
| 3 (500) | 500 | March → Assurance | 600 |
| 4 (700) | 700 | Offense → March | 800 |
| 5 (1,000+) | 1,000+ | Rend (if confident) or Offense ×2 | 1,200 |
The golden rule of solo quotas: always build a 20-30% surplus. In co-op, a bad run costs you some scrap. Solo, a bad run costs you everything.
