Mistake #1: Spending Diamonds on Speed-Ups
Diamonds are premium currency. Speed-ups are a convenience trap. A 4-hour breed is free if you wait. Speeding it up costs 4 Diamonds that took you a full day’s mine production to earn.
Fix: Never speed up anything under 8 hours. For breeding that takes 12-24 hours, use Wishing Torches (earned from friends) to reduce time — they’re free. Save Diamonds exclusively for Castle upgrades (most important), bonus breeding structures, and Wubbox.
Mistake #2: Buying Islands Out of Order
New players see the island shop and buy everything they can afford. Then they have 6 empty islands with 2 monsters each and zero income.
Fix: Unlock progression order: Plant → Cold → Air → Water → Earth. Fill each island with at least 8-10 monsters before buying the next one. An empty island earns nothing. A full island with 4-element monsters earns 500,000+ coins per day.
Mistake #3: Using Wrong Breeding Combinations
Breeding a 4-element monster with a bad combination can take 30+ attempts. The right combination takes 3-10.
| Target | Wrong Combo | Right Combo | Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entbrat (Plant 4-element) | Bowgart + T-Rox | Bowgart + Noggin | ~33% |
| Deedge (Cold 4-element) | Spunge + Thumpies | Spunge + Mammott | ~33% |
| Riff (Air 4-element) | Pango + Congle | Pango + Tweedle | ~33% |
| Shellbeat (Water 4-element) | Scups + Spunge | Scups + Toe Jammer | ~33% |
| Quarrister (Earth 4-element) | Thumpies + PomPom | Thumpies + Drumpler | ~33% |
Fix: Always breed 3-element + 1-element where the 1-element is the missing element from the target. This limits offspring options and maximizes success rate.
Mistake #4: Ignoring Monster Happiness
Happiness directly multiplies coin production. A 100% happy monster earns 2x coins. A 0% happy monster earns base rate. Beginners place monsters anywhere and leave them at 0% happiness.
Fix: Place decorations that each monster likes near them. Check the monster’s info page to see its liked decorations. Even 2-3 liked items push happiness to 60-80%, nearly doubling income. Prioritize decorating around your highest-earning 4-element monsters.
Mistake #5: Not Using Wishing Torches
Wishing Torches increase breeding success rate by ~5% each, up to 10 torches per island. They’re free — friends light them on your islands.
Fix: Add friends (MSM friend code subreddit, Discord servers). Light torches on friends’ islands daily — they’ll light yours back. 10 lit torches = ~50% better breeding success rate for free. This is the single biggest breeding advantage that costs zero Diamonds.
Mistake #6: Leveling Monsters Evenly
Spreading food across all monsters means no monster reaches high levels. One level-15 4-element monster earns more than five level-5 monsters.
Fix: Focus food on your highest-earning monsters first. Level your 4-element monsters to 10, then 15, before touching 2-element or 1-element monsters. A level-15 Entbrat earns 350+ coins per minute. Five level-5 Mammotts earn 100 total.
Mistake #7: Selling Monsters for Quick Coins
Selling monsters gives a one-time coin boost but costs you the monster’s permanent production. That Entbrat you sold for 50,000 coins would have earned 500,000 coins over the next month.
Fix: Never sell monsters unless replacing them with the exact same monster at a higher level or a Rare/Epic variant. Coins are renewable. Monster production slots are not.
Mistake #8: Neglecting the Colossingum
The Colossingum unlocks at level 15 but most beginners ignore it. It’s a separate currency (Medals) that buys exclusive monsters, costumes, and decorations that can’t be obtained anywhere else.
Fix: Spend 5-10 minutes per day on Colossingum battles. The 3 daily free battles take under 10 minutes and accumulate Medals over weeks. Even casual participation buys valuable rewards.
Mistake #9: Wasting Coins on Decorations Too Early
Decorations are important for happiness (Mistake #4) but buying expensive decorations when you have 3 monsters on an island is wasted coins.
Fix: Early game (first week): buy only the 2-3 cheapest liked decorations per monster. Mid-game (week 2-3): invest in more expensive decorations for 4-element monsters. Late game: optimize full-island decoration layouts for max happiness.
Mistake #10: Not Playing Daily
MSM is a slow-burn game designed for daily 5-15 minute check-ins. Missing days means missing coin production, breeding completion, and Diamond Mine collection.
Fix: Set a daily routine: collect coins from all islands (2 minutes), collect Diamonds from mines (30 seconds), start new breeding attempts (1 minute), re-light friend torches if needed. 5 minutes daily is all it takes to maintain efficient progression.
