Last updated: June 16, 2026. This guide covers the complete MSM breeding system with a focus on what actually affects your odds — element math, torch timing, multi-island parallel breeding, and the Ghazt-first Ethereal strategy that works.
The Scene: Your 47th Entbrat + Bowgart Attempt Just Gave You Another Entbrat
You’ve been at this for three weeks. Every morning: collect coins, re-light torches, breed Entbrat + Bowgart, wait 24 hours, hatch another Entbrat. You’ve hatched so many Entbrats that your Plant Island looks like a Entbrat convention. Still no Ghazt.
Meanwhile, your friend — who started playing two weeks after you — already has Ghazt AND Grumpyre. “I just got lucky,” they say.
They didn’t get lucky. They understood the math you’re missing. MSM breeding isn’t random — it’s a system with specific, controllable variables. The difference between “47 attempts, no Ethereal” and “3 Ethereals in 2 weeks” comes down to four things: torch timing, parallel breeding, the Enhanced Breeding Structure, and knowing when to stop.
Here’s the actual system.
The Element Math: Why Breeding Charts Aren’t Enough
Every breeding chart tells you “Entbrat + Bowgart = Ghazt.” True. But here’s what the chart doesn’t tell you.
What Actually Happens When You Breed
When you breed two monsters, the game does this:
- Checks which elements are in the parent pool (Entbrat: Plant/Earth/Air/Water; Bowgart: Plant/Water/Cold)
- Calculates all possible element combinations for the offspring
- Rolls a random outcome from that pool
- IF the outcome matches an Ethereal’s elements AND the island matches → small chance it becomes the Ethereal instead of the normal monster
The key insight: Step 4 is a SEPARATE roll that happens AFTER the element combination is determined. You don’t “breed Ghazt directly.” You breed a monster with the right elements, and then the game checks “should this be Ghazt instead?”
Why Some Combos Are Better Than Others
| Breeding Pair | Possible Offspring | Ghazt Chance per Attempt (10 Torches) |
|---|---|---|
| Entbrat + Bowgart | Entbrat, Bowgart, or Ghazt | ~5% |
| Entbrat + T-Rox | Entbrat, T-Rox, or Ghazt | ~5% |
| Entbrat + Clamble | Entbrat, Clamble, or Ghazt | ~5% |
All three-element partners give the same Ghazt odds. The difference is breed time: T-Rox (12 hours) vs Bowgart (12 hours) vs Clamble (12 hours). Pick the one whose fail outcome is most useful to you. (T-Rox produces good coins, making it the best fail outcome.)
The Torch Strategy Nobody Explains
Wishing Torches are the single biggest factor in Ethereal breeding. But most players use them wrong.
How Torches Actually Work
| Torches Lit | Approx Ethereal Odds | Attempts for ~50% Chance | Attempts for ~90% Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | ~1% | 69 | 230 |
| 5 | ~3% | 23 | 76 |
| 10 | ~5% | 14 | 45 |
| 10 + Enhanced Structure | ~8% | 9 | 28 |
The Torch Timing Mistake
Wrong: Light torches → breed → wait 24 hours → torches expire → breed again without torches → light torches → breed.
Right: Save up 10 friends who light your torches daily. Coordinate so all 10 torches are lit at the same time. THEN start breeding. Only breed while all 10 torches are active.
Why this matters: Breeding with 5 torches for 20 attempts gives you ~3% odds each time. Breeding with 10 torches for 10 attempts gives you ~5% odds each time. The second strategy uses half the attempts for nearly the same cumulative chance — because each individual attempt is almost twice as likely.
The Friend Torch Economy
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Friend lights your torch | +1 lit torch on your island (lasts 24h) |
| You light friend’s torch | They get +1 lit torch |
| You light your own torch | Costs 1 diamond per torch |
Never light your own torches with diamonds. Find friends. The MSM community has dedicated “torch-for-torch” groups on Reddit and Discord. Join one. Add 10+ active players. Light their torches daily, they light yours. This is free and it’s the single biggest advantage you can create.
The Multi-Island Parallel Breeding System
Most players breed on ONE island at a time. This is the bottleneck.
The Parallel Breeding Setup
| Island | Breeding Structure 1 | Breeding Structure 2 | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plant | Entbrat + Bowgart (Ghazt attempt) | Any combo for coins/Wublins | Primary Ethereal breeding |
| Cold | Deedge + Congle (Grumpyre attempt) | Deedge + Thumpies (backup Grumpyre) | Secondary Ethereal breeding |
| Air | Riff + PomPom (Reebro attempt) | Riff + T-Rox (backup Reebro) | Tertiary Ethereal breeding |
| Water | Shellbeat + Spunge (Jeeode attempt) | Shellbeat + Scups (backup) | Quaternary Ethereal breeding |
| Earth | Quarrister + Thumpies (Humbug attempt) | Quarrister + Stogg (backup) | Fifth Ethereal breeding |
With this setup, you’re running 10 Ethereal attempts simultaneously instead of 1. Even at 5% odds each, with 10 parallel attempts you’re statistically likely to get at least one Ethereal every 2-3 days.
The Ghazt-First Priority
Despite the parallel strategy, Ghazt should be your first target. Why?
| Ethereal | Island | 4-Element Parent | Breed Time of 4-Element Parent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghazt | Plant | Entbrat | 24 hours (shortest) |
| Grumpyre | Cold | Deedge | 24 hours |
| Reebro | Air | Riff | 24 hours |
| Jeeode | Water | Shellbeat | 24 hours |
| Humbug | Earth | Quarrister | 24 hours |
All 4-element parents have the same breed time, but Ghazt requires Entbrat — and Entbrat is the FIRST 4-element you breed. By the time you have Deedge and Riff, you could have already been breeding Ghazt for a week.
The optimal sequence:
- Breed Entbrat → Start Ghazt attempts immediately
- While waiting for Ghazt, breed Deedge on Cold Island
- Once Deedge is done, start Grumpyre attempts in parallel with Ghazt
- Repeat for Riff (Air), Shellbeat (Water), Quarrister (Earth)
The Enhanced Breeding Structure: When 25 Diamonds Saves You Weeks
The Enhanced Breeding Structure costs 25 diamonds and provides two benefits:
- 2x breeding speed — A 24-hour breed becomes 12 hours
- Increased rare odds — Stacks with Wishing Torches
The Math: Is It Worth It?
| Without Enhanced | With Enhanced |
|---|---|
| 1 attempt per 24 hours | 2 attempts per 24 hours |
| 14 attempts per week | 28 attempts per week |
| ~50% cumulative Ghazt chance in 14 days | ~50% cumulative Ghazt chance in 7 days |
The Enhanced Structure doubles your attempts per day. If you’re serious about breeding Ethereals, this is the best 25 diamonds you’ll ever spend. Buy it before you spend a single diamond on anything else.
The “Don’t Buy This” Exception
Do NOT buy the Enhanced Breeding Structure on every island. Buy it on ONE island — whichever island you’re actively breeding for an Ethereal. When you get the Ethereal, move to the next island. One Enhanced Structure, moved strategically, covers all your Ethereal breeding.
The Rare and Epic Calendar Strategy
Rares and Epics are event-only. The key is knowing WHEN to breed.
| Event Type | Typical Frequency | What’s Available | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rare Weekend | Every 2-3 weeks | Specific Rare monsters announced in-game | Breed ONLY the announced Rares |
| Epic Weekend | Monthly-ish | Specific Epic monsters | Prioritize Epics you’re missing |
| Seasonal Event | Fixed calendar dates | Seasonal monsters (Punkleton, Yool, etc.) | Drop everything. Seasonals are once per year. |
The decision framework during an event:
| |
Seasonal monsters are available for 2-4 weeks per YEAR. Missing a Seasonal means waiting 11 months. Missing a Rare means waiting 2-3 weeks. The priority is clear.
Breeding Times: The Quick Reference
| Category | Breed Time | How to Identify the Egg |
|---|---|---|
| Single-element | 30 seconds | Instant hatch |
| 2-element (fast) | 6 hours | Drumpler, Maw, Scups |
| 2-element (normal) | 8 hours | Furcorn, Oaktopus, Fwog, etc. |
| 3-element | 12 hours | Pango, Bowgart, Clamble, T-Rox |
| 4-element | 24 hours | Entbrat, Deedge, Riff, Shellbeat, Quarrister |
| Ethereal | 36 hours | When you see 36h, you got it. Celebrate. |
| Seasonal | 24-36 hours | Varies by monster |
| Rare | Same as base +1-4h | Enhanced version of base monster’s egg |
The 36-hour moment: When you check your Breeding Structure and see “36:00:00,” you’ve bred an Ethereal. This is the most exciting moment in MSM. Don’t speed it up — savor it.
Common Breeding Failures and Their Fixes
| Symptom | Real Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “50+ attempts, no Ethereal” | You’re breeding without torches | Get 10 friends. Light all torches before breeding. |
| “I get the same fail every time” | That’s normal. Fails are the parents or related monsters. | The fail isn’t a sign something’s wrong. Keep going. |
| “Torches expire before breed finishes” | You lit torches THEN started a 24h breed | The torch check happens at breed START. Light torches first, then breed. |
| “My friend got it in 5 tries” | They had 10 torches + Enhanced Structure | Ask them their setup, not their luck. |
| “Ran out of beds for fails” | You’re not selling or placing fails | Sell duplicate fails for coins. Place useful ones on Wublin Island. |
| “Spent 100 diamonds on speed-ups, nothing” | You sped up without torches active | Never speed up a breed that started without full torches. |
The Complete Ethereal Breeding Protocol
- Get 10 active friends who light torches daily (Reddit, Discord)
- Buy Enhanced Breeding Structure on your target island (25 diamonds)
- Breed the 4-element parent (Entbrat for Ghazt, Deedge for Grumpyre, etc.)
- Wait for all 10 torches to be lit simultaneously
- Start breeding — 4-element + any 3-element monster from the same island
- Do NOT speed up unless it’s an event weekend with boosted odds
- Each morning: re-light torches (friends), collect breed result, start new breed
- When you see 36 hours: You got it. Do not speed up. Wait and enjoy.
