You spawn on Starter Island with a Rowboat, a basic combat style, and zero Beli. The ocean stretches in every direction. Islands dot the horizon. The game doesn’t tell you which islands are safe for your level. It doesn’t tell you that sailing to Snow Island at level 30 will get you one-shot by the first enemy you see. It doesn’t tell you that the Devil Fruit the Black Market dealer is selling for 50,000 Beli costs more than you’ll earn in your first 5 hours combined.
Your first priority isn’t getting a Devil Fruit. It isn’t unlocking Haki. It’s getting a boat that doesn’t take 6 minutes to sail between adjacent islands. The Caravel costs 50,000 Beli. You earn roughly 8,000-12,000 Beli per hour from quests and NPC kills at levels 1-30. That’s 4-6 hours of grinding. Every guide says “buy a fruit first.” Those guides are written by max-level players who’ve forgotten what the early game feels like. Grind quests on Starter Island and the nearest two islands until you have 50,000 Beli. Buy the Caravel. NOW you can reach every island in First Sea efficiently. Now you can farm bosses that drop fruits. Now you can chase Sea Beasts that drop rare items. The Caravel isn’t a purchase. It’s the key that unlocks the rest of the game.
The island progression order exists for a reason. Starter Island covers levels 1-25. Shell Island covers 15-40. Jungle Island covers 25-50. Desert Island covers 40-70 — bring water, the desert heat deals damage over time. Snow Island covers 65-100 — bring cold resistance gear or take periodic damage. Sky Island covers 90-150 and requires finding a Knock-Up Stream to reach. Prison Island covers 140-200. Pirate Island covers 190-300. Marine Fortress covers 250-400 and is your final stop before Second Sea.
The level ranges aren’t suggestions. They’re survival requirements. Docking at Snow Island at level 30 means enemies 35+ levels above you will aggro on sight and kill you in 2 hits. The ocean looks open and free but the island levels form a linear progression path disguised as an open world. Follow the path. Sail past an island and you’re sailing past the content scaled for your level.
At level 90, a notification tells you Kenbunshoku Haki is available at Sky Island. Ignore it. Kenbunshoku gives you dodge charges that matter in PvP but do almost nothing for grinding speed. Busoshoku Haki, available at level 140 on Prison Island, gives you +25% damage on all attacks and lets you damage Logia-type enemies that are otherwise immune to non-Haki attacks. Every boss after Prison Island is a Logia type. Without Busoshoku, boss fights take 3-5x longer. Grind to 140. Unlock Busoshoku first. Then go back to Sky Island for Kenbunshoku at your convenience. The game offers Observation earlier because it’s less impactful — if you could get +25% damage at level 90, the early game would be trivial.
The Black Market dealer on Starter Island refreshes every 2 hours. He sells one random fruit at a time, priced from 50,000 to 2,000,000 Beli depending on rarity. At level 15, don’t grind 50,000 Beli for a fruit. You’ll earn fruits naturally from boss drops as you progress through the islands. The Shell Island boss has a 5% Legendary fruit drop rate. The Prison Island boss has an 8% rate. By level 200, you’ll have found or earned multiple fruits without spending a single Beli at the Black Market. The only exception: if the dealer is selling a Legendary Logia (Flame, Ice, Magma, Light) for 50,000 Beli, and you already own a Caravel, and you have exactly 50,000 spare Beli — buy it. A Logia fruit makes the next 50 levels dramatically easier through elemental immunity against lower-level NPCs. But the boat comes first. Always the boat first.
The “Fruit Before Boat” Trap in Real Numbers
A player started two accounts. Account A followed the standard advice: grind 50,000 Beli at Starter Island for a Black Market fruit first. With the Rowboat and killing bandits for 15-30 Beli each, it took approximately 4.5 hours to save 50,000 Beli. They bought a Flame fruit. They then spent another 4 hours saving for a Caravel — total time to Caravel: roughly 8.5 hours.
Account B skipped the fruit. They killed bandits for 15-30 Beli each with no fruit abilities — the same grind, just slightly slower clear speed. They reached 50,000 Beli in approximately 5 hours and bought the Caravel immediately. With the Caravel, they reached Shell Island and killed the boss, which dropped a Flame fruit on the third kill — 45 minutes of boss farming versus 4.5 hours of bandit grinding.
Account B had both the Caravel and a Legendary fruit at hour 6. Account A had a fruit and no Caravel at hour 4.5, and both at hour 8.5. The boat-first path saved 2.5 hours. The fruit you bought for 50,000 Beli was free from a boss 45 minutes after you got the boat.
The Island Level Trap: A Real Story
A player at level 35 decided to explore. They sailed past Shell Island, past Jungle Island, and saw Desert Island on the horizon. It looked cool. They docked. Enemies at level 65-80 aggroed immediately. The player died in about 8 seconds. They respawned at Starter Island. Their boat was still at Desert Island. They had to sail back — 4 minutes each way — to retrieve it. During the retrieval, a Sea King spawned. The Rowboat cannot outrun Sea Kings. The player died again. They lost all their Beli. They quit the game for three days.
Every Sailor Piece veteran has a version of this story. The ocean looks open but the island levels form a linear path disguised as an open world. Dock at islands above your level range and the game kills you in seconds. The progression order — Starter to Shell to Jungle to Desert to Snow to Sky to Prison to Pirate to Marine Fortress — exists because each island is calibrated for a specific level range. The exploration the ocean seems to offer is an illusion. Follow the path. You will save your Beli, your time, and your sanity. The islands will still be there when you are the appropriate level. They are not going anywhere. The only thing you lose by docking early is everything you were carrying.

The boat comes first. Not the fruit. Not the sword. Not the Haki. The Caravel at 50,000 Beli is the purchase that unlocks the rest of Sailor Piece. Every hour you spend sailing in the Rowboat is an hour you are spending 60 percent of your time traveling instead of progressing. The island order is not a suggestion. The level ranges are not flexible. The ocean looks open but the game is linear. Acknowledge that now and you will save yourself dozens of hours of deaths, lost Beli, and rage quits.
