The 3-Hour Mistake Every TDS Farmer Makes
Alex spent three hours grinding coins on Winter Bridge because it was the “recommended” map in their lobby. They finished every run, felt productive, and walked away with about 4,200 coins.
Their friend Jamie ran Crossroads on Fallen Mode for the same three hours. Same loadout. Same skill level. Jamie earned 9,800 coins.
The difference? Alex never did the coins-per-minute math.
TDS doesn’t show you an hourly rate on the victory screen. It shows you a lump sum. That lump sum feels good on Hardcore Mode — 1,800 coins! — until you realize the run took 42 minutes. A 900-coin Fallen run on Crossroads takes 19 minutes. Over an hour, the “smaller” win pays almost double.
This guide is the math Alex wish they had. We’ll break down exactly which modes, maps, and loadouts actually maximize your coin income at every stage of the game — and the three mistakes that cut most players’ earnings in half.
What Most Players Get Wrong About Farming
Mistake 1: Farming for Time Instead of Efficiency
Players brag about “grinding for five hours.” Hours don’t matter. Clears-per-hour matter.
If you can clear Molten in 16 minutes but Fallen takes you 28 because you fail wave 35 half the time, Molten is your better farm. The spreadsheet doesn’t care about the mode name. It cares about (Coins × Win Rate) ÷ Minutes.
Run three test clears on any mode. Time them. Divide coins by minutes. That’s your real rate.
Mistake 2: Running the Wrong Difficulty for Your Level
Hardcore Mode gives 1,500-2,000 coins per win. That’s the biggest number on the victory screen, so new players chase it. But Hardcore unlocks at level 40 for a reason. If your towers aren’t maxed and you don’t have Accelerator or Engineer, you’ll leak zombies on wave 38 and earn zero.
A reliable Fallen clear beats a failed Hardcore run every single time. Move up in difficulty only when your clear time in the lower tier stops improving.
Mistake 3: Ignoring Event Modifiers
TDS runs double-coin weekends and holiday events that stack with mode rewards. A Normal Mode run during a 2× event pays 800-1,200 coins in 15 minutes. That’s 3,200-4,800 coins per hour — better than standard Fallen.
Players ignore these events because “Normal is for noobs.” That’s free money left on the table. Check the lobby banner before you queue.
How TDS Economy Works
TDS has two currencies: Coins (main) and Gems (premium). Each is earned differently, spent differently, and optimized with different strategies.
| Currency | Primary Source | Used For | Earning Rate (Experienced) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coins | Mode completions, wave bonuses | Towers, skins, crates | 2,000-3,500/hr |
| Gems | Hardcore mode, quests, daily rewards | Exclusive towers, skins | 50-100/hr |
Coin Farming Methods
Mode Comparison for Coins/Hour
| Mode | Coins/Win | Time/Win | Coins/Hour | Unlock Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | 400-600 | 15-18 min | ~1,800 | 1 |
| Molten | 500-700 | 18-22 min | ~1,800 | 10 |
| Fallen | 800-1,200 | 20-25 min | ~3,000 | 15 |
| Golden | 800-1,000 | 20-25 min | ~2,200 | 30 |
| Hardcore | 1,500-2,000 | 35-40 min | ~2,600 | 40 |
Best for pure coin farming: Fallen Mode. Best coins-per-minute, consistent win rate with a decent loadout.
Best Maps for Speed Farming
| Map | Clear Time vs Crossroads | Best Mode | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crossroads | Baseline (fastest) | Fallen | Shortest path, easy chokepoints |
| Harbor | +1-2 min | Fallen | Slightly longer path but easier to defend |
| U-Turn | +2-3 min | Golden | Long path but good for Golden farming |
| Winter Bridge | +3-5 min | Any | Avoid for speed farming — path is too long |
Best Map by Stage: A Decision Framework
Not every player has Accelerator or Engineer. Not every player can speedrun Crossroads. Here’s what to run based on where you actually are in the game.
Early Game (Levels 1–15)
You don’t have Farm yet, or it’s underleveled. Your towers are Minigunner, Scout, and maybe Sniper. Don’t chase Fallen Mode. You can’t clear it reliably yet, and failing on wave 30 pays almost nothing.
Run Normal Mode on Crossroads. The path is short, the chokepoints are generous, and a few Minigunners near the entrance will carry you through wave 20. Each clear takes 12-15 minutes and pays 400-600 coins. That’s roughly 1,800-2,400 coins per hour — not amazing, but it’s honest work that funds your first real towers.
Grass Isle is an acceptable substitute if you struggle with Crossroads’ layout, but the clear time is slightly longer because the path curves more. Stick to Crossroads once you learn the two-tower choke.
Mid Game (Levels 15–40)
You unlocked Farm at level 10. You bought Commander at level 5 and DJ at level 10. You might have Turret or be saving for Accelerator. This is where your hourly rate explodes — if you pick the right map.
Fallen Mode on Crossroads is the undisputed meta here. A clean clear takes 18-22 minutes and pays 800-1,200 coins. With a level 3 Farm generating extra in-match income, you can afford to max Engineer or Accelerator earlier in the run, which shaves minutes off your clear time.
Harbor is the safety net. The path is slightly longer, so the clear takes 20-24 minutes, but the wider lanes make it harder to leak hidden bosses. If you fail Crossroads more than once every five runs, switch to Harbor until your tower levels improve. A slower clear you finish is infinitely better than a fast clear you abandon.
Late Game (Levels 40+)
You have Accelerator, Engineer, or both. You’re no longer asking “can I clear this?” You’re asking “what am I farming for?”
If you need pure coins, stay on Fallen Mode. Even with endgame towers, Hardcore takes 35-40 minutes. Fallen on Crossroads with an optimized loadout drops to 16-18 minutes. That’s 3,000-4,000 coins per hour on a good day.
If you need gems, Hardcore becomes your job. It pays 50-80 gems per win and 1,500-2,000 coins. The coins-per-minute is worse than Fallen, but it’s the only place gems drop in bulk. Run Hardcore when you need the currency, then switch back to Fallen.
Golden Mode sits in a weird spot. It pays similar coins to Fallen but takes the same time. The real reason to run Golden is crate drops, not coin farming. Don’t queue Golden if you’re optimizing for currency.
The Counter-Intuitive Insight: Sometimes You Should Lose on Purpose
Here’s the weird one. TDS awards partial coins for wave clears even if you lose. If you can consistently reach wave 30 on Fallen in 12 minutes but stall out there, you’re earning ~700 coins in 12 minutes. That’s ~58 coins per minute — better than a full Hardcore clear for some players.
Most players restart the moment they leak a zombie. Don’t. Let the run die naturally, collect the partial payout, and restart. The lobby timer is shorter than a full 40-wave slog, and your hourly rate can actually go up.
This only works if you reach wave 25+ consistently. Dying on wave 8 pays almost nothing. But for mid-game players stuck between Molten and Fallen, intentional “wave 30 deaths” on Fallen can bridge the gap until your loadout is ready for full clears.
The Farm Tower Strategy
Farm is the most coin-efficient tower in the game but most beginners skip it.
| Farm Level | Cost | Income/Wave | Payback Time | Total Coins Generated by Wave 35 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 400 | 150 | 3 waves | ~5,250 |
| Level 2 | 700 | 350 | 3 waves | ~12,250 |
| Level 3 | 1,400 | 750 | 4 waves | ~26,250 |

Gem Farming: The Hard Path
Gems are TDS’s premium currency. They can’t be bought directly with Robux and can’t be farmed quickly.
All Gem Sources
| Source | Gems | Frequency | Consistency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily quest | 15-25 | Daily | High |
| Weekly quest | 100-200 | Weekly | High |
| Hardcore win | 50-80 | Per win | Medium (depends on win rate) |
| Battle pass (free tier) | 300-500 total | Per season | Low (one-time) |
| Event rewards | 100-300 | Per event | Variable |
| Codes | 50-100 | Per code release | Rare |
Hardcore Gem Optimization
Hardcore gives gems based on completion speed:
| Completion Time | Gems Earned |
|---|---|
| Under 30 minutes | 80 |
| 30-35 minutes | 65 |
| 35-40 minutes | 50 |
| Win (slow) | 40 |
Best loadout for fast Hardcore clears: Accelerator, Engineer, DJ, Commander, Farm (solo) or swap Farm for Turret (team).
Coin Spending Priority
| Priority | Purchase | Cost | Unlock Level | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Minigunner | 1,500 | 1 | Best early DPS tower |

| 3 | DJ | 1,200 | 10 | Range buff + discount |
| 4 | Farm | 1,000 | 10 | Enables all future purchases |
| 5 | Turret | 8,000 | 50 | Best non-exclusive DPS |
| 6 | Accelerator | 2,500 Gems | 40 | Best overall DPS (Hardcore tower) |
